Miserable Admin Things

Some things make the life of an Admin absolutely miserable when you are trying to keep hundreds of users working with adequate performance. My updated /etc/hosts entry sure makes things work better. :)

Just use OpenDNS to block facebook, youtube, myspace. People are suppose to be working, not playing on facebook!

Not all of us work in a miserable place where we cannot organise our time as we like.

@anonymous: They are not allowed to visit FB from their desks, but we do have cyber cafe thin clients in the break rooms. The cyber cafes are not filtered; however we started getting multiple people running Farmville at lunch and there was a noticeable drop in network speed.

@marco: Our life would be a lot easier if that was true. But in reality many people would surf all day and NOT do work if it was unchecked.

Dave, Did you build a custom 404 for 192.168.99.99?

I would have created a amusing one stating the reasons why the following websites are no longer allowed.

@anonymous: I thought about pointing them to a page with a farm with a circle and slash through it...but didn't want to waste any more time on the Farm thing :)

That's up to them. Such people are in breach of the network acceptable use policy they agreed to, and can happily be shown the door. Don't let it hit their arse on the way out.
